Day 1 - June 28 - Vancouver to Mission 81km

At 7:30 we meet at the truck in the parking lot of the UBC residence to grab a quick breakfast of cereal and bananas. There are two Tour du Canada veterans joining us for today's ride as we head down to the Museum of Anthropology for the team photo. Then it's on to Jericho Beach for the ceremonial wheel dip in the Pacific. This performance proves that we really are going from coast to coast.

Getting through downtown Vancouver on a bicycle is a challenge in itself. Once we make it through the traffic and the construction we stay on the Lougheed Highway the rest of the way.

A headwind detracts from the ride a bit, but frequent stops for PBJ sandwiches give us the fuel we need to cruise into Mission at a comfortable pace. It's mainly flat with a few minor grades. We get there at 1:30 and collect our camping gear from the truck. It's interesting watching people set up their tents. A few of them are setting them up for the first time.

Afternoon activities typically include a good bike cleaning, meal preparation and a long nap in the sun. Dinner this time is trout and rice with veggie stir-fry. A little later on a campfire is made and out come the marshmallows.
