Day 10 - July 7 - Golden to Field  70km

Today's ride starts out with a tough 18km climb out of Golden. It's one of those winding roads on the edge of a cliff like you'd see in the movies. But instead of a car chase, it's a bike chase as we try to get through it before the traffic starts. A construction crew has them stopped a few kms back but they give us the go ahead.

The rest of the day is many more long hills; I'm in my small chainring most of the time. I find my knee hurts a little when I attempt a long hill in my middle ring. For those of you who don't cycle, my bike has 27 gears - 3 rings in the front and 9 in the back. Most of my riding (with the exception of the Rockies) is done in the middle chainring on the front. Occasionally I'll use the big ring (the higher gears) for a long, downhill stretch where I want to build up some speed. Lately though I've been very dependent on my small chainring (the lower gears) for these mountains. I don't know what I would do without it.

We get to Field (population 200) just after 11 and we poke around the gift shop looking at all the silly things they try to sell to tourists. Stuff like grizzly bear magnets, moose ornaments and little bottles of maple syrup in the shape of a leaf. After all, there's nothing else to do in Field. It's the size of a sub-division.

All the bear warnings around here are a little unnerving. I've read books about what to do if you encounter a bear and how to avoid it, etc. but you never really know for sure. The risk is low in a campground full of people, but it's always in the back of my mind - I don't know why.

I should go to sleep early tonight. I've been yawning while riding the past few days and I don't have the energy level that I should.
