Day 19 - July 16 - Craik to Fort Qu'Appelle  206km

The grassy area around me is all puddles as I emerge from my tent with tired eyes. I do my morning routine of making a lunch, filling water bottles, eating breakfast and taking down the tent. I'm on the road by 5:45 because it's a long day ahead of me. It rains for the first 40km with very little wind. I meet up with Al and Dave and we stop in Lumsden for food.

Breakfast tastes better than it normally would after 90km on the road. Extra packets of grape jelly find a new home in my pocket as I head out the door. We continue on to Regina in the overcast conditions, a relief from the heat of the past few weeks. A few water stops give us the strength to keep fighting the wind until we reach the gas station in Balgonie. Jan is there when we pull in so he and Al take off at a fast pace ten minutes later to get back in time to make dinner. I buy a cookie and a Powerade to fuel me the rest of the way.

There are just 40km to go before the end of my longest cycling day ever. I am running low on energy so I go at a leisurely pace with Dave. Jonathan and Jose are stopped on the road 15km from the campsite with a broken spoke, a minor problem this close to the end. Once we get to Fort Qu'Appelle, a Dairy Queen stop is called for as it is just 2km from the campsite. Michelle, John, Melanie and Paul are occupying the picnic tables when we arrive.

The evening before a rest day always leads to a campfire with marshmallows. I crawl into the tent at 11:30 feeling very satisfied with my day. Tomorrow I get to sleep late.
