Day 22 - July 19 - Spy Hill to Minnedosa  165km

At 6am we head down Route 22 with a slight following wind. The first section of this ride passes quickly, mainly because I am looking forward to the Manitoba sign the whole time. I am hoping the roads in Manitoba are more bike-friendly than those in Saskatchewan. We refill our water bottles at a restaurant in Binscarth and switch to Highway 16 from there. Just 15km later we stop at the gas station in Foxwarren because that's our last sign of life for 60km.

The heat gets to be quite uncomfortable as the day goes on. The flies are terrible. Horseflies and dragonflies take chunks out of my arms and legs as I pedal. And stopping is not recommended as they will swarm in seconds.

Along the way there are several instances of birds circling above me. There must be quite a number of nests along the highway because they fiercely defend their territory. I can't imagine what it would be like to be attacked by an angry bird simply because I stopped for a banana break. So just to be safe, I pedal faster when I see them from a distance.

Shoal Lake is our next break to refill the water supply. We have sandwiches made up at the bakery and when we walk in of course people stare. But I'm tired today so I don't have the energy to explain this trip all over again. Normally I would, but not this time. I just want to get in and out with something other than a PBJ sandwich.

The last 60km are gruelling. It's 30-something degrees outside and I'm low on water again. I go through a lot more water in this heat than when it's overcast. I'm thankful to get into camp early and set up the tent before the rain starts. It's pouring right now as I sit in the shelter of my 2-person tent, which is much more suitable for one if comfort is a factor. It certainly is to me.
