Day 23 - July 20 - Minnedosa to Portage la Prairie 144km

Dave and I don't get out of camp until 6:15 this morning, partly because of the time change. Also because of Dave's flat tire just as we're leaving. It rains for the first 10km with a powerful wind behind us, then it brightens up and the wind sticks around for a good while.

The Neepawa Subway is our first destination of the day as we rack up the kms effortlessly. We spin at 35kmh on the flat Highway 16 all the way to Gladstone where we get milkshakes to escape the heat. We're half done the ride by now and it's still early.

We cruise down the highway for a few more hours taking several water breaks and sandwich breaks to keep us going in the heat. There is no sign of the tailwind as the day goes on, but we still manage to keep a good pace. After all, if we stop too much the bugs will get us.

We head to Tim Hortons for a bite to eat once we hit Portage. The truck isn't there yet; there's nothing else to do. They give us directions to the library so we can pass the time on the computers. We get all our email done and by that time Mat has arrived at the campsite. I pitch my tent and get back on the bike once more. Al and Paul come looking for a bike shop with me, but unfortunately we come back empty-handed. There are no real bike shops in town, just a repair shop out of somebody's garage. I'll have to find one tomorrow on my way through Winnipeg. I could use a few spokes.
