Day 24 - July 21 - Portage la Prairie to Beausejour  160km

I oversleep this morning for some reason. I suppose my body is craving sleep these days. Dave is on cook crew this morning, so Al and I are all set to go by 7 when I discover that both of my tires are flat. This is not a good way to start the day. I suppose it could have been raining at the time. That would have made it worse. My front tire has a slice in it, so I put a new tire on the back and put the back tire on the front. It is common knowledge among cyclists that back tires wear out faster because they carry more weight.

By the time my tires are fixed and my spokes are tightened, Dave is just about ready to go. The three of us leave camp at 7:45 on Highway 26 and our first turn-off leads to a very ugly road. There is not one 10 foot stretch on that road that is free of bumps, cracks and rough pavement. One of the roads we are instructed to take is blocked off with construction, so we cross the White Mud River with the bikes on our shoulders while balancing on planks. The road gets slightly better as we near Winnipeg.

We get a pizza at a Greek restaurant, and we stop at a few bike shops along the way. I get the spokes I've been looking for and Dave gets his rear hub looked at. The city riding is not a fun experience. There are potholes and cracks everywhere as we continue along Henderson Highway. Once again, I am very pleased to get to camp after one more tough day on the road. I am exhausted of course, but I still like to sprint the last few kms because I want so badly to get to camp and put away the bike. I collapse as soon as I get there.
