Day 27 - July 24 - Kenora to Caliper Lake  158km

I wake up feeling very rested this morning. My legs enjoy a day off from time to time, and psychologically it's nice to be seated on something other than my bicycle. Even a wet picnic table will suffice. Anything that isn't in motion is fine by me.

I am on galley duty this morning. That involves neatly arranging the peanut butter, jam, bread and fruit bowl on the table for lunches, and then making an enormous amount of oatmeal. Breakfast is much simpler to put together than dinner as people tend to eat more post-ride.

Dave, Al and I start out on Highway 17 with a cool breeze in the air. The road is in excellent condition - a cyclist's fantasy. New pavement, no gravel and short, gradual hills. The kind that give you a chance to coast down the other side, but at the same time not that strenuous to climb. We have a tailwind most of the way and we're enjoying ourselves so much that we miss the turn-off to Highway 71 and make it 13km down the road before we realize our mistake. So we turn around and fight the headwind all the way back, adding another 26km to the day's total. We have to start paying closer attention to those route maps.

Sioux Narrows is the first town we come to after 106km (80km for those who followed the map). Big John's Bar & Grill makes a nice club sandwich; however, it still doesn't beat the kind from the Riverboat Pub, the unofficial headquarters of the Saint John Bike Club.

The afternoon passes by very quickly as the excellent roads continue. The wind changes direction frequently, but for the most part it blows east. The weather is cooler today; it's only 24 degrees. This makes the ride more enjoyable for all of us. I hear it is supposed to continue for the next few days. So far, I like Ontario.
