Day 28 - July 25 - Caliper Lake to Taylor's Cove 132km

"What time is it?"
"It's 10 to 5."
"10 to 5??"
"Yep."
"Right, thanks Glenn."
"You're welcome, Dave."
"Lynn, it's 10 to 5."
"Okay...I'm up."

All of our tents are in a row. This is great for conversational purposes, but when it comes to people snoring and getting up in the middle of the night, it can be difficult to get to sleep. I feel completely at home in my tent. It's the first thing I do when I get to camp. I find a shady spot and make it my home for the next 15 hours. Then I pack it up again and move on.

As I quickly disassemble the tent, the mosquitos are after me for breakfast. My bug spray doesn't seem to be doing the job. Note to self: Wear long pants - not shorts - in the early morning. I must win the war against the mosquitos. With consistency of practice, it can be done.

I set off with Chris and Dave at 6:15 with a shiver-inducing chill in the air. The road continues to be smooth and rockless, something any road cyclist can appreciate. The distance accumulates as we zoom up and over each hill with little traffic to consider.

Fort Frances is a small town on the US border where we stop for a nice meal. Of course, you must understand that compared to soggy PBJ sandwiches, a burger and fries is considered a nice meal. We sit on the patio in front of Rainy Lake while we indulge in chocolate cake for dessert. The rest of the ride is fairly enjoyable with only a slight headwind to keep our speed from really climbing.

I pitch the tent almost immediately, pausing only to down a can of iced tea in one gulp. Now it's nap time. I snooze for two hours before supper and feel surprisingly refreshed. On goes my mosquito shield (a jacket and pants) as I head to the fridge to make my sandwiches for tomorrow. I study the route map with Al, Dave and Jen. We all agree that today was an excellent day and that tomorrow is going to be a tough one. However, I'm sure we'll survive. We always do.
