Day 3 - June 30 - Hope to Spence's Bridge  135km

It's an early rise for everyone as we expect it to be a very long day. Bud (our Tour leader) says it's one of the hardest days of the entire trip. The first 30km is quite flat and we stop for a group photo and a sandwich just after one of today's seven tunnels. Al's back tire blows from the increase in pressure because of the high temperatures. Fortunately he was off the bike at the time.

At about the 40km mark we get to Hell's Gate, a great chance to see Fraser Canyon up close. We take the gondola/tram to the other side of the canyon while snapping pictures out of the open window.

As I go to put the camera back in its case I notice that my Oakley sunglasses are missing. They were hanging sideways on my half-zipped vest and now they're gone. So I immediately check the floor of the gondola - not there. Then I check the walkway from the gondola to where I'm standing - not there. I think back to what I did on the gondola. I obviously leaned out the window too far forgetting they were there. Now they're God knows where drifting down the Fraser River.

At this point in the day I still have 95km of mountains to cover to reach the campground. It's constant up and down the rest of the way. Then I hit Jackass Mountain, where you really have to be one to want to climb it on a bicycle. It's a long climb in 32 degree heat and what little water I have left is hot.

I get to the campsite a few hours later - sunburned, sore and dehydrated. My galley crew is assigned to make supper tonight with chicken burritos on the menu. It's unbelievable how much your body can consume after such a physically strenuous day.

I'll sleep well tonight; I'm really getting used to sleeping in a tent.
