Day 34 - July 31 - Terrace Bay to White Lake  143km

My watch alarm goes off at 5am. Just as I'm getting up to walk to the bathroom in the dark, I remember the bear warning from last night. So I drag my feet on the gravel road the whole way to let the bears know I'm coming. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but there are better ways to start my day than a bear encounter in the early morning, when they're most likely to be wandering about.

I manage to get some of my things organized for the day before breakfast, because it's my job to make it. I crack 50 eggs for French toast and I spend 45 minutes dipping and flipping. This kind of breakfast is much more labour-intensive than oatmeal or cereal. Mat tells us what to make, so there isn't a lot of room for debate. It all depends on what we have for ingredients and what we're trying to use up before it expires.

Once we get on the road, the fog is so thick that we can't see the hills until we're already on them. This can be a good thing actually. It forces me to concentrate on the current stretch of road, rather than always looking ahead at what's coming.

Surprisingly, the fact that this area is extremely hilly doesn't bother me at all. It's fun going up the hills, and it's even more fun on the way down. Everyone I speak to agrees that this is much better than the Prairies. The scenery is nicer and the roads are smoother.

We finally luck out and get a tailwind for the last 40km. And it's mostly flat, so we're cruising at speeds of 35 and 40kmh. This is another one of those great days. When it ends with a tailwind, I can't get enough of it. Cycling fast is thrilling. It's that simple.
