Day 35 - August 1 - White Lake to Wawa 130km

The humidity hits us hard today. We've been getting used to the cold mornings, but the temperatures keep climbing as we continue south toward Sault Ste Marie. The trees are bent over sideways with the tips pointing straight at us. I can tell early on that it's going to be a tough day.

The hills get easier as we get farther away from Lake Superior. The locals tell us that once we get to Sault Ste Marie the hills are virtually over. It doesn't matter that much to me. Hills make me stronger; they're good practice. Spinning on a flat with a tailwind helps too, but not to the same extent.

We take a food break 60km up the road. I find it strange that the waitress is extremely quiet; in fact, she doesn't seem to understand me at all. Then I clue in that it's because she only speaks French. As it turns out, she is much more talkative in French than English. I didn't know that there were that many francophones in Ontario.

As usual, we are delighted to get into camp the afternoon before a rest day. There is another bear warning for tonight. I hope my tent isn't too close to the blueberry bush. Just to be safe I've collected a few good-sized rocks to carry in my pocket in case I have to get up during the night. I've never tried throwing rocks at a bear...but then, how hard could it be?
