Day 36 - August 2 - Rest Day in Wawa

I see a hare hopping through the campground this morning at 7:00. It pauses to sniff each bike and each tent, briefly chewing on Dave's pedal as it makes the rounds. It scampers off into the woods as I approach.

I walk to town with Jonathan for something to do. We go to a place called Wally's and get the breakfast special. Then we walk down to the library for computer access. It's closed when we get there so our next stop is Radio Shack across the street. They have a computer setup for paying emailers. A cab ride back to camp works out well. We arrive just in time to get some hashbrowns before they're put away.

I get my laundry done in the morning so I can have the rest of the day free. Al finishes all he needs to do in the early afternoon, so he offers to clean my bike. He even waxes it for me. I buy him a beer afterward as a thank-you.

I go out to dinner with Glenn, Al, Dave and Jose at 6:30. The Northern Lights restaurant on the highway advertises an enormous 3-pound double cheeseburger, free to anyone who can eat it in an hour (and the fries too). If you don't already know, I like a good challenge. Only one person has ever done it. I am really hungry at this point in the day because I have skipped lunch in preparation for this. If ever I could do this, it would be tonight.

Eating a 3-pound double cheeseburger is like eating twelve quarter-pounders. It's sickening. I start out strong and eat the fries first. The guys are making jokes as I go; laughing doesn't help me digest it any faster. I am half done after 20 minutes, and then my pace drops fast. After 50 minutes I get to the point where I can't eat another bite. In other words, I hit the wall - hard. I must have consumed about two and a half pounds of that burger.

I feel awful back at the campsite. I don't even want to look at another cheeseburger until September. People are congratulating me on my attempt as I show them the digital pictures. Mat and Chris tried it after me, and neither of them could do it. In fact, Chris took a walk behind the restaurant afterward and saw his meal in reverse.

I plan to stay up a little later tonight to let some of it digest. I admit it - it wasn't an intelligent move on my part. It did, however, provide a source of entertainment for the people watching.
