Day 38 - August 4 - Pancake Bay to Thessalon  160km

I feel much better this morning. I wake up with a good appetite, ready for an excellent day of cycling. Like my friend Dick Chiswell says, it's fun knowing each morning that you have nothing else to do but go biking.

The temperatures have been a little extreme lately. Even if it's only 29 degrees, it can be 40 degrees with the added humidity. It doesn't become a problem as long as I stay hydrated and take it slower on the hills. The worst thing I can do with a shortage of water is eat because digestion uses up water. To stay strong, I drink much more than I eat. And I eat a lot.

The breakfast special goes over easy when we stop 70km down the road. Jose comes in while we're eating. It is not uncommon to see various little groups of riders on the road, usually stopped for the same reason - a food break.

We have a new addition to our team today. Matt joins us from the 74-day group (who left a week ahead of us in Vancouver) because he took a few days off on account of an injury. He wants to complete the trip so I understand why he switched. He has a recumbent bike, the kind where the rider reclines in a chair instead of leaning on the handlebars. It has three wheels; most recumbents have two. He says cars give him lots of room because they all slow down to check out the bike.

At 6:30 I walk over to the office to use the phone. And while I'm gone Glenn sees a squirrel on my bike bag trying desperately to get inside. I had left a PBJ sandwich in there, not considering the threat of wildlife at this time of day. He chases it away, but not before it chews a hole in the zipper. Now it will only close with the aid of a bungee cord. Doesn't matter though, it wasn't a very good bag anyway. I was planning on tossing it after this trip. I guess I'm not the only one around here with a thing for peanut butter.
