Day 40 - August 6 - Massey to Manitowaning 114km

The humidity really gets to us today. It's only 29 degrees, but it feels like 40. The hills are short and quite enjoyable. I feel fairly strong in the headwind (which we have come to expect day after day) as we cover what we are told is a very hilly area.

We catch up to John and Michelle 20km before crossing the swing bridge to Manitoulin Island. It takes all five of us in the paceline to get through this section and as Al says, "These are some of the worst winds we've had the whole trip". Just after the bridge we go for ice cream because it is marked on our maps as a worthwhile stop. It does not disappoint.

There are lots of hills today, and the roads leave something to be desired. There is usually some element of each day that I enjoy. This morning is overcast and we get a few sprinkles of rain to keep us cool. Even on the not-so-good days, I am still covering the required distance. That's the key to finishing this Tour. Stay positive, keep pedaling and remind yourself daily why you're here. One month from now when I'm back in school I'll wish I were still here with this group. Wishing the time away just doesn't make sense.

No one is hungry this evening because of the humidity. All we want to do is keep the liquids circulating - whether it be water, juice or beer. We make a pasta mixture for supper - Jose's special recipe. It goes over very well; we get rave reviews.
