Day 42 - August 8 - Tobermory to Craigleith 180km

The humidity soars up to 38 again. It gets a little uncomfortable at times. I go through my water much faster and I get tired a lot earlier. It's days like this when I like to leave early.

A bumper sticker catches my eye today. It reads "One Day at a Time". That fits my mentality perfectly these days. I do my best to tackle each day separately and not concern myself with hills and headwinds to come. People have said to us, "You're going to Newfoundland?? You guys are mental". And there is some truth in that, but if you divide it into smaller sections, you start to think of it as "what you do". You get up every morning and go cycling. It's my most memorable summer yet.

We make a special trip to Jolley's Bike Shop on our way through Meaford. The mechanics treat us very well and work on our bikes for over two hours. Al gets his spoke ends replaced, I get a new chain and Dave gets a whole new back wheel. It has to be one of the nicest bike shops we've hit so far.

We get a meal at DQ before heading out, and we get into camp at 7:30. Normally we're in a lot earlier than that. As soon as we get there, we are shocked to learn that Jose has been hit by a car. He was coming through an intersection in Owen Sound just as a car coming from the right was signaling right. Then it suddenly swings left and cuts in front of him. He remembers hearing the helmet crack beneath him. He came out of it with a separated shoulder and some bad road rash. It won't be the same without Jose. He was a strong rider and a great addition to the group; we'll all miss him.
