Day 43 - August 9 - Craigleith to Toronto  188km

We have a new recruit with us today - James. He asked me to wake him up early so he can leave with us at the crack of dawn. Rupica and Spencer join us too. It's a hot day coming. This heat wave is not over yet.

A 9:00 milkshake stop seems to please everyone as the temperature rises over and above the comfort zone. It gets so hot as the day goes on that people are telling us we shouldn't be biking at all. We should be inside in front of an air-conditioner to prevent heat exhaustion. It's 38 degrees, 43 with the humidity. Whether we feel we need to or not, we stop every 15km for water. There are a lot more hills than I expected and I just can't handle them as well as I should. The heat is destroying me. I keep telling myself that it's only a little farther until the next water break. I try different hand positions and lower gears to ease the burning in my muscles, although poor hydration is what's affecting me most.

The campground is in Pickering, which is quite a distance from downtown. Most of the riders this year are from the Toronto area, so they're off visiting friends and relatives while the rest of us stay in our tents. John and Michelle live in Beeton, so they invite Dave, Al, Murray and myself to sleep at their place. After a wonderful meal of BBQ chicken and fresh vegetables, we get our laundry all done and we get to sit on a couch. The latter doesn't happen too often. It's a special treat.
