Day 46 - August 12 - Campbellford to Canoe Lake  148km

Al and I are moving along at a good pace this morning. The wind is with us and the roads are free from traffic. This is an excellent day for riding; it isn't nearly as hot as it was.

We get to the corner store/cafe in Marlbank and see Jan's bike already there. He's been chatting with the locals while eating his breakfast, and he sure looks glad to see us. They explain a different way to go that shortens the distance by 20km. This is good news of course, until we discover that in reality it is only 2km shorter.

Just for fun, I ride really hard for the last 70km. There are only a few hills on this stretch and there is a slight headwind to hold me back. I love cycling at high speed. It is absolutely exhilarating. My legs burn with fatigue with each pedal stroke while my mind zeroes in on the road ahead. I do a mirror check to see if Al is still with me. Indeed he is. Al is a strong cyclist - no doubt about it.

We are told there is a forest fire behind our campsite, so Mat has to move the truck to give the emergency vehicles enough room to get by. They seem to get it under control fairly quickly. The air has been so dry here that fire risk is way above normal. Hopefully it will rain soon. The grass isn't green anymore.
