Day 48 - August 14 - Rest Day in Ottawa  23km

Today's agenda is simple. Tour this beautiful city by cycling along the Rideau Canal and soaking up the local culture. We hit all the best bike shops and see the changing of the guard in front of Rideau Hall. This city has so much to see; I wish I could stay another day.

Next up are the obligatory pictures beside the guards. Now that's a tough job. Those people have to stand like statues in complete silence for hours while kids point and laugh and people like us take pictures. It's quite hot today and I don't imagine those heavy coats would be too comfortable.

The bridge to Hull, Quebec leads to more great bike shops and a chance to practice my French for the first time in a long while. I get a new roll of handlebar tape, stock up on Power Bars and find a great deal on racing tires. Pleased with my purchases, I head off with a bulging plastic bag tied to my handlebars. Bike shops excite me. I've seen some really nice ones on this trip.

Glenn wants to visit his Italian Godparents, Maria and Luigi Guido, and invites me to come along. They are such nice people. They hadn't seen Glenn in years. Maria whips up a fantastic meal in no time. We have pasta, meatballs, salad, bread, cheese, wine and pie. The Italian culture is very hospitable and I can even understand a few words when they speak to Glenn. It would be a fun language to learn. Italy is also a popular cycling destination with so many mountains close by. And they make excellent bicycles. Maybe I'll get one someday.
