Day 52 - August 18 - Champlain to Quebec City 130km

Today is officially declared a spinning day as far as I'm concerned. My legs need some recovery time after what I did to them yesterday. I grab a Power Bar for breakfast before we head out. I slip another one into my jersey pocket for later.

It rains off and on as we move along Highway 138 at a moderate pace. We take shelter under the trees as the rain comes down in buckets. My right knee stings when the water hits it, a direct result of my fall the other day.

Chris walks into Tim Hortons while we're taking a donut and juice break and joins us for the next 30km. The hills are good practice for me as I focus on my pedal stroke while keeping up a high cadence. Chris finds it funny when Glenn says to me in a coaching manner, "Come on! Spin!". I respond well to his encouragement because he knows a lot more about cycling than I do. I learn something new about this sport each time I ride with him.

Once again, our enormous appetites get the best of us. We go to a pastry shop for a bite to eat and as we're sitting on the front steps I notice a slice in my back tire. It's a new tire that I had just put on a few days ago and now it needs replacing. I ask the woman behind the counter where I can find the nearest bike shop. Turns out it's just up the street. It's called Bicycles Record and it's one of the nicest bike shops I've ever seen. I get another tire and treat myself to a new pair of gloves. The guys who work there are drooling over Glenn's bike, a Calfee Tetra-Pro. So while one of them is out riding it, I get the pleasure of trying a Colnago CX-1. This is about as nice a bike as you can get. It sells for a whopping $10,000. I would never spend that kind of money on a bicycle, but it sure is fun to take it for a spin.

Laval University is within 5km of the bike shop. The signage needs improvement as it takes awhile to find our way to the correct residence. I'm sharing a room with Rupica tonight and it'll be nice to sleep in a bed again. It hasn't been long since Ottawa, but I can never get enough of the whole sleeping indoors concept. I've grown to appreciate it more than ever before.

Dinner is a few slices of pepperoni pizza right out of the box. There is no cook duty tonight since we're so far from the truck. I bring a chair into the hallway to give my bike a good cleaning. The dorm room has very little space for this sort of thing. I've got my rags, my degreaser, my wax and my new tire. This should keep me occupied for awhile.
