Day 8 - July 5 - Sicamous to Albert Canyon 114km

I leave at 6:30 this morning by myself. Sometimes it's fun riding alone, especially on a beautiful morning with a backdrop of mountains to gaze at. I get thinking about what it will be like to tackle those mountains in the next few days, wondering if it will be as difficult as I've imagined it to be. I suppose I'll find out tomorrow when I cover Rogers Pass.

All of this speculation about what I'll see in the coming weeks makes the time pass quickly. My odometer reads 60km already and it's only 9am. I meet up with Jose while I'm stopped taking a picture. We continue into Revelstoke and stop at McDonalds just long enough to meet up with Al, David and Aggie who are finishing their lunch. Coming out of Revelstoke means another big hill, followed by 45km of ups and downs into the campsite. Once there, Al hands me a beer to congratulate me on a hard day's work.

It's just another hot day of cycling; the only thing that really bothers me is the incredible size and number of ground squirrels scampering about the tents as we set them up. These are not your typical squirrels; they are so comfortable around people that they run around your ankles looking for food.

I make double sure my tent is securely zipped before I go to sleep. Not only because of the squirrels, but there's a sign at this campground telling me that I'm in bear country from now on. That means clearing the tent of things like food and toothpaste so I can sleep without the paranoia that comes with taking risks like that.
